For the past few years, i've been fortunate and blessed to have written at least one 'landmark' song per year.. In 2008 it was 'Someday' which entered into the finals of the Malaysian Revival Songwriting Competition. In 2009 I wrote 'This Christmas' which was used to promote the Christmas event at Full Gospel Church. In 2010 last year it was 'Spur', which was the theme song for our TNT Camp. And this year...??

Living now in a new city, with a new job, new church and new ADDITION to our family (R A C H E L )... It has all kept me quite busy, distracted.. and I haven't really found the inspiration or motivation to write anything..

I thought this would be the first year that would go by where I won't write even a single song. Until motivation and inspiration came in the form of two friends and a wife..

Nechelle asked me to write another Christmas song.. when it was just a week before Christmas! She said it's easy.. Even she can and has written a lullaby song for Rachel!
Boon Fei told me about the songwriting workshops back in FGC, and last week sent me the mp3 and lyrics to his new song, which i thought was one of his best!
And then there's Karl who came up with this video of his awesome cover of 'Let it Snow'..

It's a good day to be alive.

no appointments..

Because this is how it's meant to be.
To set aside every human instinct to strive on, fight on, push on, get more, do more..
And just stop.. cease.. to a standstill.

God himself set the example and showed us the way of doing things best..
He rested on the seventh day.
And on top of the example came a command we are to follow..
Six days you are to work, and on the seventh, rest.

It is a demonstration of faith.
The faithless man will work seven days a week, because that makes the most human economical sense.
Why waste a good 1/7th of your days on.. not working towards your goals? Obviously the business that runs seven days a week makes more than one that opens for only six. Don't be lazy man..
You'll cover more ground if you study seven days a week.

But by choosing to rest, I'm telling the world that my trust is not in my own efforts.
My trust is in God, who is my Father, my Provider, my Shepherd.
It's because of HIM, that i can rest.
It's because of his love for me.
I know that he will supply all that I need--
Strength, Wisdom, Favour, Courage and Ability

They say life is about the journey, as much as it is the destination..

And I think they are right. Yes, destination is heaven, Eternal Life, and happily ever after, but I do believe that God is equally interested in our journeying, our walk, our day-to-day, our 'living'.. the PROCESS of growing closer to Him, learning to love Him more, experiencing His faithfulness, and learning to walk with more faith and less fear, learning to trust in FACTS that we believe to be true, instead of being troubled by the equally real FEELINGS that so often cloud the former.

I want to live, truly live..

And to do that I know that i'll have to embrace the fact that i'll never 'arrive' or 'make it' until the very final day... the day I breathe my last with these earthly lungs. That glorious Day when we who believe are all gathered together and up, to be united forever with the invisible one we've been looking to all our lives.. our Maker, Lover, Saviour and Father.

And so I rest..

Knowing that this day, imperfect as it was, or rather, imperfect as I was in living it.. will soon pass. As will the days ahead. As will trials and hardship, victories and joys. But He will remain. His Word will remain. His Promises will remain. His Love will remain. And on these truths I build my life.

Interesting to note.. this is from the first Newsboys album to feature Michael Tait (formerly 1/3 of DC Talk) as their new lead singer. I love this song for its powerful feel in 6/8 rhythm, which took me some time to figure out due to its unique way of emphasis (oh, did i spoil it for you?).

it's been over four months since my last post..

and i guess the whole reason is.. the readership..
i mean i know a lot of you guys (thank God for all of you) actually do come by to visit my blog every now and then.. but then, like a friend of mine puts it ' people want to see responses '.. or something like that..

yeah, it's like, not extremely encouraging to see '0 comments' to your blog posts.. even after leaving it for over 4 months..
i'm not blaming anyone.. it's not like my blog posts are so great that they deserve at least some comments.. but it's just the lack of feedback, you know..
whereas in FACEBOOK or twitter, you'd get an instant 'like' or comment from one of your hundreds of friends or contacts..
and if you start some really juicy discussion then the number of comments just hit the ceiling..!

so yeah.. this is it..

on prayer

The biggest challenge of the Christian life is probably the challenge to pray consistently-- to cultivate that discipline of daily spending time before our Lord and to seek his face before we see the world. We know the big difference it makes whenever we start our days right with God, and yet often we find it so very tough to get out of bed a little earlier to keep that morning appointment with God. Lately God has been encouraging me to pray more consistently everyday and i just wanna share some quotes on prayer that i'd received in my inbox recently.. The real test of our kindness, patience and love is when we're faced with the unkind, the impatient and the unlovable..
That would be the acid test of our calling to love the world as Christ has loved us.

Jesus calls us to love not just our friends and those who like us, but also our enemies, and those who don't like us. If our love is reserved for only those who deserve it, then as Christians we have missed the point because our love is no different from the world's. Of course it's not gonna be easy to live up to this command, and in fact it is often bordering on the impossible. But as we reflect on God's great love for us and how by grace he has forgiven all of our sins even though we are undeserving of it, his Spirit helps us to love others as he had loved us.

it's good to be back

Wow.. it actually feels good to be back in the hospital after the long five-week break that i took..
Overall i'm feeling quite brand-new and 'recharged' for another season of service at the work of my calling..
The five-weeks has done me good-- i must confess that it has been of tremendous profit to me physically, mentally and spiritually. Physically- because all that proper eating and sleeping times worked their magic. Mentally- after all that serious medical revisions i did in preparation for the exam, i actually feel an increase in my degree of 'smartness'. And spiritually- well i don't think i've ever prayed more consistently or seriously in any past five-week period of my life thus far.

And i quite appreciate the warm reception i received from my A&E colleagues and staff today. It's always nice to feel welcomed and 'missed'. And although it was a relatively busy day at the yellow zone, i had great HO's to help me and it was quite difficult for any untoward situation to ruffle the good spirit I was in. Nice..

Fractured left humeral neck

Poor Sandra had a slip and fall while walking down the stairs yesterday.. and fractured her arm at the shoulder. Thankfully there were no other injuries. She's been serving our family faithfully for almost twenty years i think..

Hi, here's a big shout-out to all you mothers out there... Happy Mother's Day!
Hope you have a great day of being appreciated for all your hard work, pains and sacrifices for bringing up your children...
Truly, there is no way to quantify or measure all that you've done, and nothing can quite compare with the love that a mother has for her own children.

The chinese have an old song which roughly translates as, "The only good under heaven is Mother.."
And the Malay song goes, "Ibu, engkaulah ratu hatiku.." (Mother, you are the queen of my heart)..

As for English songs.. well.. none really come to mind, except for newer pop songs from the likes of the Spice Girls (Mama I love you), and Boys to Men (You're the queen of my heart).. Any more that I've missed?

Here in JB, we treated Nechelle's mom to a nice japanese dinner and got her some pretty flowers...
As for my super MOM in KL.. Well, she got a lunch treat today from my Sis and specially ordered flowers from us too.

Of course, Mother's Day is only a small yearly reminder to us that we ought to appreciate, love and care for our mothers all the other days of the year. To our Moms, thank you for all that you've done and WE LOVE YOU =)

juz to make sure no tumour coz she has constant pain...

Hi friends..
wow, it's been another long gap (4 months) since I last blogged..
So, how's everyone getting along with life?

Well, i'm currently on a long leave.. FIVE weeks to be exact... and the reason for it? Well, some of you may already know that i've been preparing to sit for an exam this year and so for this final one month i just wanted to have more time to focus better on my studies. Work and study is great, but actually not very conducive with my work demanding a lot of overnight calls, sleepless nights and frequent disruptions to a normal diurnal cycle. In other words, i can't study well when i don't get to sleep well every night!!

So anyway, this leave has been doing wonders to me even after only three days... It's awesome to able go to sleep at night every night, and get up the next day in the morning, every morning! Something so simple, yet taken for granted by almost all of YOU!!! Okay, sorry, if i sound like i'm whining again.. but hey, this is my blog right?

And what nature of an exam is it? (grammar, anyone..?)
I don't want to reveal too much too early, but it's basically an Australian paper that would give me the option of applying for work down south. Not a bad deal at all right..?

Nechelle and I have been praying about our careers, calling and future, and we're just gonna hand it all to our good God, and trust that he will lead and guide us in the way that is best, all the way.

Wow, it's less than two weeks to Christmas..! How's everyone doing?? It's been more than two months since my last post here... Are my blogging days finally behind me?? We'll never know..

Well, today i'm proud to present to you the result of a few days of hard work and long hours... a SONG that i've written especially for this year's Christmas. As some of you may already know, i'm helping to organize this year's Christmas Celebration at church.. so i've been doing a little extra praying and thinking about CHRISTMAS-- What is Christmas really all about and what does Christmas mean to me, TODAY? And what does Christmas mean to the world around me, even to the people who don't know Christ??

This song was written because we live in a broken world, with much pain and hurt, disappointments, struggles and hopelessness. Now I believe that as Christians, we have something to offer. Christ gave his all because of His great love for us, so that we would have real peace, love, direction, guidance, strength and abundant life. And that's what this song is all about. JESUS can and will turn your life around. This Christmas, let's give our hearts to Him and receive new life!!

Nothing to report..

Ok, a confession... i've been super-procrastinating a task that i should have done a long long time ago..
Er.. actually come to think of it, it's many more than just one task that i've been putting-off to later times.. hehe..

And instead of working on it right now, i'm loafing around at my blog, blogging about nothing much actually...

They say blogging is therapeutic.. That it helps reduces tension in stressful times, as u put pen to paper, or rather, thoughts to text.
Seeing your situation or problems gradually being translated to text in black-and-white somehow clarifies or simplifies things a little and helps us make sense of the hurried and messy world that we inhabit.

So what have i been procrastinating? Well it's this songlist for a friend's wedding.. I need to get the chords and lyrics emailed out to the musicians and singers, and i need to get it done TONIGHT! Yes... now that i've said it, i must do it :))

Funny..

So what's been keeping me busy these days?? Well for one, there's Mafia Wars.. The very addictive game on Facebook that just keeps you wanting to climb up all the levels and beat all your friends. Haha.. You get points for doing 'jobs' and 'fighting' and when you reach a certain number of points you get promoted to the next level, and then more jobs and items become available to you. And on and on..

But actually the fun part of the game is competing with your friends and seeing who can reach higher levels faster.. Which brings me to my next point, of why the game may be losing its appeal to me....

There's this bug in the game which the designers don't seem to be in a hurry to fix.. That the page where you can see all of your friends and their rankings (ie. the most important page).. automatically becomes disable when your 'mafia size' reaches 100 members. Mine hit a hundred about a week back and i was wondering what happened to that page. I could no longer compare my ranking with others! It took me quite a few days before i realized that it was a commonly known bug after i did a simple search on the game forums (yes, i was THAT desperate). Haha........

But bugs aside, overall it's quite a cool game with a great concept, and makes for interesting off-line discussions too. It's not a must-play, nor highly recommended by me.. but do check it out if you have a couple of hundreds of hours to burn. Cheers.

JOHOR BARU: An 80-year-old grandfather was brutally slashed by robbers on motorcycles even after he handed over his cash and a Seiko watch to them.

The octogenarian required 23 stitches for two slash wounds to his scalp caused by the parang attack at about 5.15am on April 22.

He was on his way to the bus stop to go to town to meet his friends, just as he had done two to three times a week for the past 20 years.

He said his father finally received treatment at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

Siow Kee said he was a few metres away from his house along Jalan Kasa 7 in Taman Sentosa when two men set upon him, holding a parang and demanding money.

Terrified, he quickly handed over his wallet containing RM200 and his watch.

Still, the robbers slashed him three times and sped off, leaving him bathed in blood.

Here's a breakdown of what and where to go in Penang, especially all the best makan places! The stall for fried kt has been relocated into a cafe named Kafe Heng Huat on lorong selamat. The stall was featured on 8tv so, don't expect a friendly uncle or aunty. Hehe. They a bit grumpy wan. You can explore other shop around the lorong lor. Got poh piah, oyster omelettes, ice kacang, prawn mee. Have fun!

For a good fine dining experience, i suggest bagan restaurant in gurney. Nichole david goes there a lot. Maybe u guys can bump into her. If not, northam cafe is a good place for dinner.

If got time, can go botanical gardens near gurney, butterfly farm in balik pulau, got night market in bt feringghi after golden sands hotel can buy souvenirs - must negotiate n cheap dvds, if adventurous go for beach activities in golden sands hotel

MRSC Finals

Haven't been blogging for quite awhile now.. :)

Nothing much has happened.. except a second honeymoon to Bali, Christmas, and of course the MRSC Finals in which all of you faithfully supported (Thankyou very much!)

We didn't win, but we had good fun and an experience to remember. I'm truly glad that i got to share a song that i wrote from my heart and having this great band of friends believing in the song and backing me all the way.

We called the band 'WATERFALL', which is a picture of God's abundant and overflowing grace in our lives, and performed alongside eight other finalists comprising bands and also a few solo performers. The show was held at City Harvest Church in Sunway, and done-up quite grandly, with appearances by local celebs like zainal abidin, suki, amber chia, and a couple of well known christian bands.

Dear friends.. thanks so much for all your support and encouragement. I'm glad to announce that we were successful at last Sunday's competition and made it to the finals!

The band did awesome. I got some of my old friends from KL (Lam, Ian, Aaron and Marcus) for a practice one night before and somehow everything just came together and clicked beautifully. There were 20 songs shortlisted before this and the judges have now narrowed it down to just 9 songs that will compete in the finals in december.

I'm really grateful for the enthusiastic support many of you have shown me throughout this contest. I now realize that this competition was as much of realizing how much the people around me do care, as much as putting the song to the test and seeing how far it can go. Actually it doesn't matter very much to me now what happens from here on.. I'm already overjoyed to have made it to the finals!

It was a very nice dinner.. Joel was very busy as expected, but I got to do some good catching-up with Poh..

Yesterday was a superb but tiring day. In the morning, joined Ben & Karl for table-tennis at BL. Finally took my new bat out of the bag and used it for the first time after buying it a few months back. :) And it was a good bat. And i had a tremendous work-out.. sweating through and through, a few times over.. And now every muscle in my upper body aches.. ow.. And here's the best part-- Ben's student at Sunway came along and he's like a former state player, and so he's like way out of our league, but he's this really friendly and helpful chap, so he was giving loads of very helpful tips and pointers to me and the others, which really made the game much more enjoyable! After the short 'training session' he did for my forehand, i actually felt like i've suddenly becomed a better player. Cool stuff. Watch out for my smash, you guys. Looking forward to the next meet.

Today i was supposed to go for a morning swim, but: a) i couldn't get up, and b)i think i deserve a break after the great work-out yesterday.. i'm exhausted!

Ah... The holidays! Finished work at 8am this morning, wished all my Malay staff Hari Raya, then headed home for breakfast with my darling. Slept five hours, then packed-up to go swimming. We wanted to catch a late lunch before going for the dip, so we met up with Anne and Roy at the Molek Let's Eat...

But due to the slightly gloomy skies (not favourable for swimming) and of course the great fellowship and laughter with the Chan's.. we ended-up eating and drinking and chatting non-stop for almost three hours! Nice.

Now we're at another party, back here at my parents'-in-law. They're hosting a BBQ for a couple of friends from church.

And i'm here chilling with the web and some chicken wings.

i'm feeling good..

last friday, led the discussions on Ps. James' sermon 'Overcoming depression' and i think it was a very helpful and encouraging session for all present, myself included. Saturday was splendid. Nech and I had a 9am breakfast at Tea Garden with cellmates Eric and Ashley, Angela and Chooteen, then all of us went for a swim at Mutiara Johorland. Not a bad pool at all. Clean, clear and nice. And we had the whole Olympic-sized pool all to ourselves. Not bad at all.

I was working the PM shifts on both Saturday and Sunday.

Today, got up early and had a sleepy breakfast with my beloved wife.. then after dropping her off at work, i went for another dip at the Mutiara Johorland pool! Had a most lovely work-out, doing 2 laps more than i did last Saturday. Again, the whole pool was all mine.

Went to Jusco to get some groceries, then met Vincent for lunch. He's gonna plan a diving-trip for us next year Feb! Simply fantastic.

Now i get to laze around, and be a 'house-husband' for awhile, till tonight I go to work at 10pm. Nice life, praise God!

the beauty of working shift hours

Yesterday night was quite busy at the A&E.. Even though we had one extra MO on hand (usually we have only 2 over nights), the steady stream of patients flowing in through both the resus and green zones kept the three of us up and going almost all night long.

But the beauty of working shift hours is that at 8am you get to punch-out-- Escape, release, home, peace, rest, sleep and many other wonderful things all await, as you step beyond the doors of the hospital and make your way to your car, starting that serene and sweet ride home.

I slept seven hours. The alarm was set to ring after five, but hey it's a free country and i'm a free man, so let's revel in the freedom that we enjoy.

Now fully recharged and renewed, I get to enjoy a grand and sumptuous dinner of wine chicken, prawns and lala, made with love by the greatest chef of all time, my mom-in-law.

Tonite we enjoy again a night shift with three MO's, and hopefully it won't be as busy as yesterday.

A cup of coffee now would be super!

the BLS

Just got back from the one-day Basic Life Support (BLS) course at the hospital today. Basically it was about standard CPR techniques for adults and infants based on the latest 2005 guidelines. For me it was more of a refresher and an updating course, because i remember going through a very similar, but more thorough and detailed course back at med school.

But i quite enjoyed the whole process, actually. From the lectures and practical sessions in the morning, to the theory and practical exams in the afternoon. Simple, short and sweet. This will be a precursor for future course which i am eager to join-- the ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), ATLS (Advanced Trauma), MTLS (Malaysian Trauma) and the likes.

Lunch, i took two very senior MA's from Sultan Ismail (HSI) who were attending the same course to the famous laksa stall at Kebun Teh. Nice chaps, and good fellowship it was.

And the laksa was great, as usual. :)

Tonite i have to go back and do the night shift from 10pm, so i'd better get some shut-eye soon. Ciao.

wow it's been a long day..

Did the morning 8am - 3pm shift, then rested 2 hours at the old fifth floor O&G doctor's room, and then went back to the Emergency to do the much coveted high-ringgit-per-hour locum also known as the KRPSWP (Klinik Rawatan Pesakit Selepas Waktu Pejabat)-- which i admit is quite a mouthful to say, but actually quite fun to type out. We call it KRP for short, thank God. :)

So anyway, i was up and chirpy and surprisingly energitic all the way till a little past 11pm-- at the final hour.. and then it hit me-- the tiredness... Man.. I've been going on and on since 8am.. and it's finally dawned upon my systems that they quite miss the bodily configuration called 'sleep'. You can tell that after five good months at the A&E, my body has nicely adapted to the new timetable with its short and sweet 'shift hours'. I don't think i can ever go back to doing those insane 24-hour adrenaline-paranoid-fatigue calls which i did for over a year back at O&G.

So why am i blogging at this hour, you ask..

And why am i not sounding like my usual self.. i think?

Anyway, i've got to be up early again tomorrow to attend the 'Basic Life Support' course at 8am.

Woke up early today and went to the hospital to listen to some people tell me their problems so i can offer them some sympathy and then try my best to do what i can to help them (I usually call it 'work'.)

Did that for a couple of hours, then sped home on my Hero (which i usually call the Wira) into the arms of my wonderful friend and lover to spend some precious together-time. After a short nap, we went for a nice dinner at Lavender in Jusco with our favourite iced Mocha and iced Cappuchino. Yum!

I gave Mom a call to say hi, since she and Dad have just returned successfully from their fourth courageous expedition in Europe. They have bought us a very lovely gift from Paris.. To be delivered to JB soon, on Dad's next business visit.

We're so excited! THANKS MOM AND DAD!!

Away from the blog for quite some time..

Dropped by in Singapore the previous weekend and met up with Lem and gang.

Last weekend, took a six-day break with Nechelle and went up to KL to meet-up with my parents, then drove down with Carol to Port Dickson for an intensive TNT Camp, then drove back up to KL to send Carol back and also to spend another night there.

It was tiring...

But i'm glad to be back and in the green.

Just received an SMS from the MRSC organizers that they've received my songs. Yup, it's not MRCS (Which is something every doctor talks about) but MRSC -- "Malaysian Revival Songwriting Competition". http://starmaker.com.my/MRSC2008.html

This was not a debate. It was a "civil forum" organised by Saddleback Church, a huge and hugely influential ministry run by Pastor Rick Warren, a multi-million selling author.

Michael Phelps is the man!

Meanwhile, our Chong Wei succumbs to world number one Lin Dan in yesterday's badminton finals and has to settle for a silver. Still, it IS Malaysia's first olympic medal since 1996, and fouth medal ever, bringing the tally to two silvers and two bronzes, with all of them coming from badminton.

Phelps wins historic eighth gold

Michael Phelps won his eighth Olympic gold medal of the Beijing Games to beat Mark Spitz's 1972 record of seven, with victory in the 4x100m medley.

The 23-year-old teamed up with Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Jason Lezak to claim the historic gold for the United States in a world record time.

Phelps, who swam 17 times over nine days and set world records in seven finals, had already won the 400m medley, 200m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 4x100m free relay, 4x200m free relay, 200m medley and the 100m butterfly.

However, his final triumph was far from straightforward.

Phelps dived into the water for the third leg butterfly with his team in third position but he powered them into the lead.

Australian Eamon Sullivan tried to chase the Americans down but Lezak held on to clinch Phelps' record win.

Phelps admitted to being overwhelmed after achieving his feat, and was quick to pay tribute to his team-mates.

US swimmer Michael Phelps broke the record for Olympic gold medals won by taking his 10th and 11th in a double victory on Wednesday.

Phelps, 23, won his fourth gold of the Beijing Olympics and 10th of all time with victory in the 200m butterfly.

And he claimed yet another gold as part of the US 4x200m freestyle team.

Phelps has now surpassed the nine golds won by Paavo Nurmi, Carl Lewis, Mark Spitz and Larysa Latynina to cement his place in Olympic history.

The US star came a step closer to gold number six when he eased through to the semi-finals of the 200m individual medley, winning his heat in a time of one minute 58.65secs

Assuming that sterile water has NO role in managing labour pain (as in, it truly IS a placebo), this study has successfully proven that women will experience less pain in labour if they stay away from acupuncture. Hardly surprising, considering all those pins involved!

But that was acupunture done in the West. I wonder how a similar study would fare in China..

Recently Swedish workers looked at Acupuncture versus subcutaneous injections of sterile water as treatment for labour pain (Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand. 2008;87(2):171-7)

The main results of this study were that sterile water injections yielded greater pain relief (p<0.001) during childbirth compared to acupuncture. The secondary outcome showed that women in the sterile water group had a higher degree of relaxation (p<0.001) compared to the acupuncture group. The women's own assessment of the effects also favoured sterile water injections (p<0.001). There were no significant differences regarding requirements for additional pain relief after treatment between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS: Women given sterile water injection experience less labour pain compared to women given acupuncture.

i know like tons of friends and colleagues and senior doctors in our JB hospital who have graduated from Manipal or the Melaka-Manipal twinning programme. And i've always felt that they did produce a pretty high standard of graduates, actually. This is quite surprising.

Medical degrees from Manipal Uni Derecognised

In an abrupt move, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has said that it will not recognise medical degrees offered by India’s leading Manipal University, citing lack of clinical facilities and flouting of regulations.
Last week the MCI, a regulatory body of medical institutions, announced its decision not to recognise the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBs) courses offered in the university’s Kasturba Medical Colleges in Manipal and Mangalore.
“There were several inadequacies in the college which would not allow students to benefit completely from the course,” a senior MCI official was quoted as saying.

There are many Malaysians who have graduated from Manipal and there is also the Melaka-Manipal Medical College. The Malaysian Medical Council recognises degrees from Manipal but I wonder if the MMC will review the status given this recent development.

Ahh.. had a lepak day at home today..
Today was a day-off, so i got to laze around a bit.
Did some housekeeping, caught up on some reading, and got to be nechelle's driver for the day.
Woke up early and her to work in the morning, picked her up for lunch, and after work, we drove to Jusco for a bit of shopping.. she had to get some gifts for some colleagues.

Now i'm back at mom-in-law's.. after a nice wholesome dinner (I'm a happy man)..

Don't have much to blog about really.. Just thought of giving you guys a brief update.

Good news-- Carol my sis will be joining us at TNT camp in Port Dickson later this month! It'll be so cool.. Nech and i will drive up to KL a few days earlier to meet up with my sis and parents, and then we'll make the trip down south together!

Btw, hats off to Mom and Dad, for organizing yet another holiday to Europe for themselves. You see, my parents are real heroes in the sense that they don't join tour packages or safe trips like that-- They prefer to do all the booking and travel arrangements on their own and then just venture out into uncharted and foreign territories, boldly going where they have never been before. This time around they'll be covering some of the northern european countries like Norway, Russia, and a few others i don't remember. This is their 4th Europe trip i think. They'll be flying off on 1st sept. Take care and don't get lost, ya!!

A barely disguised car was spotted on the roads of Pune in India a few days ago, sporting a front grille that features cues from Honda’s latest front fascia styling book (ref: Honda FCX Clarity, Civic Euro hatch). Apparently the red plates on the car are similiar to those that Honda have used on their Indian test cars in the past, so there is a good possibility that this car is the due replacement for Honda’s compact Honda City sedan.

From the first look of the car it seems the design is more European like the Accord. The car looks more sturdier compared to the present model. Wide grills with a huge bumper stamps its presence on the road . The rear is something similar to the BMW 5 series but the tail lamps are more boxy. The V-tec model being launched would be of 120 BHP but its uncertain on the variants to be launched in India.

Overdose of preservative in longan

OF THE 374 samples of longan tested from June 24 to July 7, 23 were found to have exceeded the permitted 30mg level of sulphur dioxide for each kilo of fruit, reported Kosmo!

The paper quoted Kelantan Health director Dr Lila Mohamed Meeran as saying that the department frequently detected overuse of sulphur dioxide in longan.

“Such fruits will be rejected and will not be permitted into the country,” she said.

Sulphur dioxide is commonly used to preserve the colour and texture of longan, as well as prevent spoilage from fungus attack.

Eating longan overloaded with sulphur dioxide can cause headaches, skin itchiness and excessive sweating.

Dr Lila cautioned consumers not to bite the skin to peel open the fruit. They must also wash the fruits thoroughly to reduce the sulphur dioxide residue on the skin.

wow, i'm really looking forward to the next 10 days..

I'm gonna be on PM (3-10pm) shift for 6 consecutive days, and after that i have four day-offs!
In other words, ten days without night duty! Woohoo!
So i'm gonna have the chance once again to experience the privilege and pleasure of getting a full night's sleep every night for ten nights! Haha... Well actually, during my honeymoon last year i had a full MONTH of good sleep and rest, but that's a different story.. hehe..

So anyway, i was really nervous and anxious the whole of last week prior to my 'short sharing' at church. I talked about mostly God's goodness and how he's answered my prayers to bring me out of the old department and into the new. Many were quite amazed at the incredible but true figures i presented-- Our JB hospital churns out 50-60 births per day amounting to 19- 20,000 deliveries per year which is by far the highest delivery rates for any single hospital in the entire country. And yet we do not have the most number of medical officers in the dept-- in fact, we're severely short-handed. We were functioning often times with only 10, 11 or 12 MO's. Can you imagine that? The amount of stress, responsibility and pure, unadulterated, hard WORK. Not to mention the admirable lack of rest and sleep. I had to do NINE or more overnight calls per month, every month, for almost the entire one year and two months i spent there.

But of course i must express my sincere gratitude to the boss for his kindness in letting me off for an entire month in Dec to get married and enjoy a splendid honeymoon in Europe. And i've also heard that work conditions at the O&G dept have improved significantly since i left in April. Good for them and good for me, thank you very much.

I wish to say here that it is not my intention to slander or diss my past place of work. I just want to highlight the fact that Dr. David went through a tough time last year, and now he's mighty glad and grateful to God that it's finally over. That's all :-)

Petrol saving tips

So from now on, i'm gonna:
1. fill-up when my tank is half empty (meaning more trips to the station)
2. fill-up in the early mornings (meaning i have to start earlier for work)
3. fill-up at low speed (meaning i have to wake-up earlier to start much earlier for work!)

Haha...

But really, as a thinking man *ahem, the tips here really do make some scientific sense..

Tips on Filling your Vehicles...

ONLY BUY OR FILL UP YOUR CAR OR BIKKIE IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS STILL COLD. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground, the denser the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening.... your litre is not exactly a litre.

In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products play an important role. A 1degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

WHEN YOU'RE FILLING UP, DO NOT SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER OF THE NOZZLE TO A FAST MODE. If you look, you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode, you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are created, while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS IS TO FILL UP WHEN YOUR TANK IS HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank, the less air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.
Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated, so that every litre is actually the exact amount.

ANOTHER REMINDER, IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP - most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.
Hope this will help you get the maximum value for your money.

Had a good night call yesterday.. :)

I asked God to grant me a quiet night, with just a few patients and not too many major problems.. And God answered my prayers! I was basically just walking around the whole night, having fun chit-chatting with the staff and seeing the occasional patient. Hehe..
And the amazing thing is that yesterday we actually had the highest number of patients in a day this year! Four-hundred and eighteen patients came through our doors in 24 hours.. Which is a lot, because normally we hardly ever hit 300. Reason? -- Yesterday was 'Hari Hol' a Johor state holiday, and unfortunately NOT a national nor Singaporean holiday.. so many *ahem 'drama kings and queens' came to try their luck for a cheap MC.

Please pray for my friend Zaw, who's stuck in hospital with a big infected wound on his leg. He's been out of action since late last month, and now he's getting restless, bored and i think a bit depressed. The doctors are planning to do a skin graft to patch the whole thing up, so let's pray for a successful operation.

Speaking of sleeping enough, i think i slept too much today.. hehe.. confession time..

I guess that yesterday was quite a tiring day. I was on AM (8am-3pm) shift, then on the way out bumped into KEN at the hospital and we went out for a nice yamchar session. Night, was the usual tuesday night TNT band practice. Eevynn joined in the fun and i think we all had a good meeting. Too bad that it'll be Victor's last practice with us :(
Thereafter it was off to mamak for a late dinner.

Woke-up real late today.. late enough to just wash-up and get dressed just in time for lunch with Nechelle.. hehe.. and then back at home i did some serious housekeeping!
Yup.. i sent the clothings to the laundry, cleared up the pile of junk in our room, threw out a lot of trash, and mopped and swept the whole house! As expected, after that i was just too beat-up to do anything else so i honorably retired myself for a grand and well-deserved nap.

Hehe.. and i just woke up..

Actually all my sleeping today is justified (still defending myself/making excuses)..
I'm on night duty (10pm-8am) today!
So i need to make sure that all my batteries (cellphone and brains) are fully charged!

Sleep deprivation

Sleep deprivation has not found its way into my vocabulary nor acquaintance in recent times. Ever since i joined the new Emergency department at the hospital about 3 months ago, with its fabulous 'shift' system and adequate manpower, i've been blessed with time to rest and sleep practically everyday! Yes, i still have to do the occasional 'graveyard' shifts overnight, and i still do not have the weekends nor public holidays automatically as off-days, but the great thing is that the shifts come in 'bite' sizes of only about 7 hours, so work has really become very bearable, tolerable, yes even enjoyable (What? it's time to go back already? Man, just when i was starting to enjoy myself!)

That, and not to mention the much higher level of job satisfaction, being a primary care physician, the first doctor anyone sees at the hospital, handling trauma and life-threatening emergencies, and treating a very broad spectrum of society representing humanity-- from the youngest to the oldest, male and female, local and foreigner, medical and surgical, the poor and the rich (Okay, maybe some rich blokes don't come to government hospitals, but hey if you suddenly fell unconscious on the roadside and nobody knows you, guess where the ambulance will take you to? That's right, to my doorstep :))

Thereafter, it was another satisfying shift at work-- Taking the resus zone at the Emergency.
Today was particularly peaceful. Busy, but not too many 'big' problems. Didn't have to do any intubation or other heroic acts of the trade. Hehe..

And now it's back home with my dear 'lou poh'.. watching chinese soap and blogging!

Going to watch a movie again tonight! Forbidden Kingdom, pairing the two most successful Chinese kungfu stars who have crossed-over to Hollywood-- Jacky Chan and Jet Li!
I've always loved Jet Li, and Jacky has been.. entertaining. And seeing how this movie has grossed so well in the US, I'm looking forward to it!

I'm on night-off today, meaning that i've done two night shifts in a row and thus get the whole day off today. Nech took a half-day leave so we could both go visit the dentist.

We were at Jusco, and bought the movie tickets for Nech's parents and bros as well. It's gonna be movie night!

Oh yeah, the movie tickets for 6 people on wednesday cost rm42, but then Nech found 10 bucks on the floor, so that's an instant rm10 rebate! Haha..

I finally bought that printer that we needed so much..
and also got in alot of groceries and toiletries..

Now it's 9pm.. and i'm just killing time before reporting for duty at my new department-
the A&E!

I'm really starting to like this whole shift-work timetable. It's a far cry from my previous 'oncall' days. Praise the Lord!

to Kukup and back!

Hey everyone.. we just got back from our night-over at Kukup...
Kukup is this small fishing village near Pontian, Johor, which is supposedly the southern-most tip of Johor and Semenanjung Malaysia, according to a signboard we saw on the way..
People come here to relax and EAT SEAFOOD!
Lots of Singaporeans dig this place..
Well for me, i'm not that big a fan of seafood and fishing villages.. but this place is definitely worth a visit at least ONCE.. especially since i've never been to any place like this in Malaysia.

The similarities to Venice, Italy abound-- the whole place is built over water.. the houses are on stilts.. and inaccessible to cars.. lotsa boats.. This was confirmed when we stumbled upon 'Kukup Venice Resort'. Hehe..

And so i went with Nech and her CRT company people..
And we DID eat lots of seafood..!
Plus, I've finally learnt how to play MahJong! And guess who taught me? Nech... in about just 5 mins! I must be a genius, coz i won the first two games that i played! Haha...

L - the movie

Hey, the movie 'L' was not bad at all! Very cute.. all the scenes featuring L were always entertaining.. haha.. I wonder if anyone actually behaves like that in real life?? And also the kids were fun.. especially that math genius 'Near'.. so cute! Hehe.. But the film was also decorated with random bursts of violence and gore.. a bit too much really, till it becomes laughable... especially that extended 'dying scene' of the professor who killed himself with the deadly ebola-like virus. Quite yucky.

Anyhow, it was a great watch and a definite recommendation for all who liked the earlier 2 movies.
(And the music is good too!)

Tonight is movie night!
And i'm going out on a date with my dear 'lou po'....
We absolutely loved the two Deathnote movies and have been waiting for this 'L' spin-off for quite some time. And finally it's here!
Lately, we've been warming up by watching the tv screenings of the previous 2 movies on Channel 8 (singapore). It was in mandarin, though.

The review on cinemaonline said it gets a little boring about halfway through the movie.. but hey, this is a must-watch for die-hard fans like us!

To the uninitiated, you can get a quick background by looking up 'deathnote' on wikipedia. Very interesting..

Call of Duty!

Wow.. i never thought that i would ever graduate from playing CS..
I mean, Counter-Strike IS the best game ever made...
But now i'm proud to say, after a few COD sessions with the faithful bros from the TNT...
i've finally gotten the hang of it!

The graphics are much better.. with very realistic environments, weapons and people.. and most importantly-- it's FUN!

Though, i'm a bit groggy after the three-hour session we just had-- i think we need to cap our future outings at 2 hours max. Somehow CS wasn't this mind-dizzying..

Okay, now to proceed with some non-gaming activities..

Emergency Medicine

Next week will probably be my last week at the department i've been with for the past one year..
When i joined O&G over a year ago, i thought that it would be a temporary thing.. a few months at the most-- i was awaiting transfer to Sarawak.
But things change, plans change and life has its way of churning up surprises.

So next week, i'm going to start yet another phase in my life-- roughing it out in the field of Emergency Medicine.
Friends tell me it's essential training and invaluable experience for someone aspiring to start-up his own GP practice-- a dream which i have in my heart. And recently, God HAS opened a new door of opportunity for that dream to come true.

I did not choose or apply for this transfer to A&E, and i had initially shunned the idea of working 'shift' hours.. but i believe that this is the direction God is leading me to go and that it's the BEST path to take right now. That's the wonder of living under the favour and guidance of our good Father in heaven.

Yup. Satuday and Sunday off... and then i have this Breast Feeding course on mon-wed to attend.. (I AM working at the maternity department, you know..)

Tonight, Nech has a company annual dinner to attend. I'll be going to church, to hear Bill Newman preach.

Right now i'm having this crashing problem with the new computer's Vista. The troubleshooter sugests downloading SP1 and installing it, but it's gonna take time coz the file is a whooping 434MB. Last check, it's only 12% downloaded. The other thing i thought of doing as a solution to the problem was to just reinstall Vista. You know, with the ORI installation disc that came with the Dell. But whatever it is, it's quite a hassle. Especially if i had to backup all my pics and all.

Well.. my sis is off to Phuket for weekend on an all-expenses paid company trip. And her boss Zaid Ibrahim, is a newly appointed minister on Badawi's cabinet. So things are looking pretty good for her.

Ahh.. it feels good to be blogging again....

Had a good day today..

Yesterday, monday, i was oncall..
It was a good call.. no big problems and i managed to get rest after 2am. Mostly thanks to the current arrangment where there's a third MO tagging in labour room.. so, most of the problems got settled before they could bug me. Nice.

I was on leave today... Had it planned since the beginning of the month.. coz i wanted to get rest after some calls.. which turned out to be not a very bad idea at all!!

I could have spent the whole day sleeping.. but i did something better-- managed to work a bit more on my recording project and i'm glad to say it's pretty much done! It's not perfect in any way, and some flaws are still apparent, BUT- i've come to the point where i'm satisfied and i'm ready to move on to the next song! Hey, this is no pro studio okay.... it's just a very simple setup consisting of my old laptop and a mike!

post call today. Had a great call though-- slept through most of it.. thanks to good colleagues and of course the undeniable grace of God. Even the early morning round was a breeze, with the house-officers doing a great job-- efficient and effective.

I managed to leave the hospital at 8am sharp, and started my always delightful drive back home to my beautiful place in Pelangi Indah. Nechelle was not at home, to my surprise-- i had forgotten that she had to work today (she works every alternate saturdays). So, i helped myself in, and wasted no time in turning-up my workstation and pumping my home recording studio into full rev. Tired? Sleepy? Hungry? Those are the three words that don't really cross my mind whenever i sit down and start doing some audio wonders.

So what is it exactly that i do? Well lately i've been working on this new song 'the joy i feel' and i've already laid the tracks for the drums, bass, guitar and lead vocal. This morning, i added a 'ahem' rap part at the bridge by overdubbing my own voice a couple of times and then running them through my usual compression and reverb routine. The result-- something quite pleasant to the ears (at least to mine, haha). Okay, before you start getting any wild ideas, i'm in no way a pro yet, so pls don't get a shock when i release the final mix! Hehe..

Okay the comp has hung and restarted 3 times since i started typing this post.. it's telling me to stop!

working today.. another busy day as usual.. hmm.. haven't had lunch yet. Think i'll go catch a quick bite after i'm done with this one scan.
I've been working quite a bit on my latest recording. so far still about halfway done. yesterday i managed to recruit good ol' Lam to drop in some hot guitar licks. We'll see how it goes.

Ahh.. finally got around to fixing my old blog up. The side bar is now up and running again.. and my songs are now on feature again. I just realized that months have passed since i last posted a new song here.. I really wanna get busy recording again. God has been good, and i've been quite productive in the song-writing process-- Written 3 new songs in the past week, including one that i really really like. Can't wait to share it with you all.

well as always.. it's good to be alive. i really praise God for his goodness in my life and how he is always so real to me. Just had another good call yesterday.. one of the best this year so far.. got to sleep and rest much. Had a meeting with Boss and Pengarah with all the other MO's in the dept today.. Seems like i'm gonna be in here for quite some time more. BUT, our God is a supernatural God and he knows the cries and desires of our hearts AND is able to turn the most impossible situations around with just a simple touch of his hand.

SO, i'm just gonna stay in faith, trust him completely for my welfare, my future and my dreams. I'm gonna rejoice in all the circumstances he engineers into my life, and bloom wherever i'm planted. He has a good purpose in all of this.

I've been listening to a lot of Joyce Meyer and Joel Osteen lately, and i find it more and more so true-- Happiness is really a choice. We have to choose to be glad in the Lord in whatever circumstances we're in. Instead of letting our environment dictate our feelings, we should let the Word of God in us breakforth in overflowing joy, affecting everyone and all things surrounding.

"Rejoice in the Lord, and again I say: Rejoice!"

hehe... i'm finally back from my 2 month absence from the blog!! Hoho...
Sorry for having neglected my poor blog since.. early december!
Reason?
Well.. mostly the same one that every one gives... LIFE! And all its busyness..

So what's been happening during the long break?
Well, too much actually... so much that i'll probably save myself and you guys too alot of time by just announcing up front that i really can't and don't want to blog about all that has been happening.

Okay, just a very quick review--
1. i got married
2. i went for my honeymoon in europe
3. i came back and started work again

Hmm.. that wasn't as difficult as i had thought.

Hmm.. it's kinda difficult to concentrate right now, sitting one metre from the tv with 'grey's anatomy' running-- My dad's a big fan. And, i'm a doctor. It's bound to distract me somehow no matter how hard i try.

Bad news. We're been praying for a sister in our church whose bro was involved in an accident on tuesday and ended up in ICU. The doctors said he had only a day to live but we were hoping, praying and believing God to work a miracle. But this morning i got the msg that he did not survive. Why and how God allows such an awful tragedy to befall good people i do not know. But what i do know is that he still is a good God, who loves us and always has our best interest in mind. I believe God has a good purpose behind everything that he allows to happen.. even those that we don't understand. In time, eventually, he'll make it all known to us. Just continue to trust Him.

So, the big day's tomorrow..

Mom is busy making final arrangements for the dinner.. Joshua is busy editing the video from the JB wedding.. Dad and Sis are at work.. Nechelle is washing her hair.. and I am HUNGRY!

Thank God i've finally figured out how to connect to my house's Aztech router. The default wep key is 'aabbccddee'. Hoho.. Come near my house and connectlah!

This morning we woke up early (10am actually) and had a fine time of prayer and devotion together. We read a passage from 'Quiet times for couples' about how the glory of man is the acknowledgment that woman was made for him. And the glory of the woman is the acknowledgment that man is incomplete without her. Then we spent some time praying for some of the needs of the people around us.

Tonight, my parents are hosting a party at our place for the entire 'Sin' clan. And the plan according to popo is to bring a bunch of small baby boys to jump around on our wedding bed-- Go figure.

Day Two

This has been another good day.

Started the day with a fine session with Nechelle and with God. We have started to do our quiet times together using one of the books we received as a wedding gift-- 'Quiet time for couples'. And so far, it's been good!

Then it was a lot of packing, coz we had to pack for staying in KL a couple of days, then pack our suits and gowns and stuff for the wedding dinner this Saturday, and also pack for our 2 week plus trip to Europe. So we packed up all these stuff into two cars, left one car with Nechelle's aunty and drove the other to KL.

It was a rainy drive. It rained practically all the way from JB to KL. But thank God we had pretty good visibility and made good speed too. Arrived safely in a little over 4 hours.

To welcome us, we were presented with our new wedding room! Mom and Dad had fully redecorated and refurnished my room, transforming it into something totally unrecognizable! I love it, and so does Nechelle. We can still smell the fresh coat of paint.

Day One

Wow today i'm really happy. I can finally feel the thrill of the long holidays before me and today feels like Day One of the adventure. Last tuesday, i couldn't really celebrate the fact that it was my last day of work before the long holidays.. coz i had a super-big mega project before me... the wedding weekend!! But after the church ceremony on saturday, 90% of my stress was relieved, and the remaining ten percent or so disappeared after the wedding luncheon on Sunday. Then it was Monday, but i had to go back to work for a day on Tuesday to do an oncall.

Now that all that is done my joy, so to speak, is complete. hehe..

I spent much of today playing a spiderman game on the PS2. Now that's something i don't usually do.. and it was fun. Very entertaining actually, hehe.. then i slept like nobody's business, and then i woke up and played the piano and sang my heart out.. ahh.. it's been a fantastic day.

Nechelle, my darling bride, just got off from work. She too, went back to work for two days before we begin our honeymoon leave.

Tomorrow, it's time to drive back to KL!

I wanna say a very big and heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you for your help, support and LOVE to make my wedding most memorable and joyous and successful! I really appreciate the time and effort many of you have dedicated to Nechelle and I, and while i may not have thanked each and every one of you personally, i wanna say it here again-- THANKS!

So now that i'm finally married, how's life you ask? Well.. i gotta say that it's SWEET. And I'm glad that we're making this whole journey together.. not just the two of us, but with our good Lord and Saviour Jesus. With God's love in our lives, I believe and know that our love will never run dry.

Today has been a relaxing day of rest. We're gonna start opening some of the presents later.. and also count some still unopened angpows. $$Ka-ching!

And we're looking forward to cathing up will all you beautiful people in KL for our dinner at Equatorial this saturday!! See you there!!

bachelor's night

Okay i'm so excited. ONLY TWO DAYS TO GO!!
It's thurdays already and how time flies when your wedding is drawing near..
It's noon and I just woke up. Didn't sleep late last night.. I just thought that i needed a bit more rest coz i anticipate that starting today, it's gonna get really fast and furious for everyone.

My parents and Carol will be arriving today evening.. and i'm looking forward to a nice reunion.. haven't seen them in many months.

Joshua just called to confirm some of the details. He and Prakash and Joyce will be driving in from KL tomorrow with some 'heavy artillery' for our wedding video. Sounds good!

Ps. James will be emailing us the wedding vows so we can start practising it. And memorizing it-- Nolah, just kidding.

And tonight, Roy, Choon Siang and some of the other guys are organizing a 'bachelor's night' for me. I'm glad and looking forward to it, but honestly don't know what to expect. Surprisingly, I've never been to one before. Just hope it's not like the ones we see on TV-- Haha..

Okay, gtg. Nechelle is coming to pick me up shortly to go to town to collect her gowns and finally buy her shoes. I wanna get some ties too.

okay i took an MC today becoz i'm down with fever. Yup i know.. the wedding is only 5 days away and i really should be taking care of my health more. But.. all that lack of sleep, late nights and long restless days took its toll on my body.. and yesterday evening i started feeling unwell. After a quick dinner, i hit the bed at 9pm and collapsed into sleep.

When i woke up with a fever i decided to take the day off especially since i'm not oncall.. So i called the boss who said 'ok'. Then i hit the bed and slept almost the entire day. My dear Nechelle came over during lunch with some kuay teow soup but i wasn't the hungriest person so i only ate a bit. Then it was more sleep and rest.

Now i'm at Nech's, typing at the computer and i just took two panadols. I hope i'll be well by tomorrow coz i don't wanna call-in sick again. Anyway, it's my last day of work before my long leave!

So basically that was my day.. sleep.... and more sleep.
